Dear musicians and supporters of SSM, As autumn draws near, the directors of the Scarborough Society of Musicians have been busy preparing for the upcoming season. In order to further improve SSM to better meet the needs of our musicians and our community, we have jointly decided to begin the next season in January 2011. In the mean time, we will be working to survey musicians around the city to learn more about how we can help support them in continuing music. We will also be lining up more opportunities for performances as well as outreach to share in the love of music-making with the community and to advocate for the importance of music education. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions, suggestions or if you want to be involved in helping revamp SSM. We’ll be in touch with more updates! -Your SSM team

WHO ARE WE? Founded in February 2008, the Scarborough Society of Musicians is a non-profit organization aimed at providing post-secondary school students who are not pursuing professional studies in music, an environment to continue developing and exploring their talents. WHY ARE WE HERE? Our mission is simple: to keep music alive. The Scarborough Society of Musicians is unique in that it caters to those who would like to be involved in music, but who may lack the time or competitiveness when compared with full-time music students and professional musicians. Although there are large numbers of students who are involved in high school music education programs, very few go on to pursue music in their post-secondary endeavours. Thus the musical experiences of many students end after graduating from secondary school. OUR GOALS? (a) to extend the high school musical experience by creating an environment where post-secondary students currently not studying music can continue to enjoy the benefits of participating in musical ensembles; (b) to advocate the benefits and importance of music education and appreciation for the arts; (c) and to develop a connection between the youth and the community through music.
